From the history of Baikal

“Baikal” in translation means “The rich lake”. The tradition of worship the Great lake consigns the roots to the distant past. The first-ever reserve on lands around Baikal was created by Genghis Khan. The soldiers were forbidden to wash ammunition in the rivers and streams that flow into Baikal. Also it was forbidden to cultivate the land, to build cities and to hunt.

According to some historians, many descendants of Genghis Khan are buried in the lands around Baikal, including Khubilai, the emperor of the Mongol Yuan dynasty in China.

The first Russian reserve – Barguzin – was also created on coasts of Baikal. It was formed on 11 January 1917 according to a new style.

This year we celebrated its centenary. In the Soviet period, it was taken an industrial approach when on the coast of take an Baikal was built Pulp and Paper Mill and launched the Angarsk cascade of hydroelectric power stations, making Baikal a reservoir. In modern Russia, the government has an increased focus on Baikal.
